- Town exit the cup in torrential conditions

Denbigh Town have exited the Nathaniel MG Cup at the Second Round stage following a trio of goals from Buckley in less-than-ideal conditions.

Asa Hamilton’s brace and a superb strike from Liam Driscoll saw the home side through as the rain lashed down in Flintshire.

It also ended a run of exactly 365 days since Town last failed to score in a match, a run that consisted of 38 consecutive matches.

With manager Dewi Llion and First-Team Coach Matty Jones unavailable it was left to assistant boss Kristian Pierce and First-Team Coach Brett Jones to take charge on a miserable afternoon at the Globe.

Dan Parry-Jones was available for the first time this season and he replaced Morgan Thomas-Sadler whilst Sion Jones and Craig Pritchard started for the first time.

Denbigh began the game on top and forced goalkeeper Ryan Goldston into a save after just three minutes when Nathan Brown’s goalward free-kick was tipped over.

Two minutes later a corner routine saw the ball fall to Ryan Kershaw but his low drive was easily matched. The torrential rain had a real effect on the game, slowing the ball down and making life difficult for both sides, as Buckley took 12 minutes to have a chance at goal, when Jake Roberts went through but was denied by Aaron Jones.

On 20 minutes it was Driscoll with the chance for the Bucks, as his effort was denied by a superb stop from Jones in a back-and-forth affair.

Harry Lockley, making his 25th Town appearance, went into the book after 23 minutes with a rash foul in midfield but Buckley couldn’t capitalise.

The only thing that dried up in the first half-hour was Denbigh’s chances but they eventually carved one out when the ball came to Pritchard on the right who chopped inside before his effort was deflected out for a corner. It came in and after being initially cleared was fizzed across goal where an outstretched Pritchard could only turn it wide.

Half-Time: Buckley Town 0-0 Denbigh Town

The weather didn’t let up in the second period and the rain fell harder than the challenges in midfield, as both sides battled for the breakthrough.

It took Town two minutes to have their first chance of the second period as Kershaw’s run into the box eventually saw him hit the target via the a Tom Weir deflection but Goldston gathered.

Following a pop shot from Kershaw three minutes later the tide turned and after a run into the box Billy Holmes fouled his man in the box, presenting Hamilton the chance from the spot, he duly delivered by firing down the middle to put his side ahead just short of the hour mark.

Two minutes later it was 2-0. Driscoll picked it up in midfield and leathered the ball into the top right corner with Jones clutching at the sopping air.

Holmes went off with a knock shortly after and was replaced by Craig Rogers for his first appearance of the new campaign, before the stand-in management introduced Jake Walker and Keiron Roberts for Tom Weir and Sion Jones.

Denbigh continued to be a threat down the right with Pritchard again forcing the keeper into a solid stop but at 2-0 the game began to feel deflated in comparison to it’s earlier stages. With ten minutes left to run Hamilton grabbed his second and Buckley’s third when he forced home after a scramble in the box.

Owen Herbert made his debut with five minutes to spare replacing Brown and was in the thick of the action during his cameo.

Denbigh couldn’t make a breakthrough and their long scoring run came to an end along with their Nathaniel MG Cup dream for another campaign.

We return to action in the JD Cymru North on Tuesday for our first competitive home match since May, as we host Caersws (19:30).
