- Weir wonder strike seals big three points

Denbigh Town returned to winning ways on Bank Holiday Monday as a wonder strike from Tom Weir proved to be the difference at Chirk.

Weir’s incredible strike on the hour mark separated the two sides in a close encounter as Town ended a run of two defeats in the JD Cymru North.

Dewi Llion made a change to his last starting XI with both Craig Rogers and Jake Walker coming into the side for Ryan Kershaw and the suspended Jason Foulkes.

Meanwhile, there was also a place for new signing Josh Lock on the bench.

The first chance of the game came within the opening two minutes when Nathan Brown had a shot tipped over the bar from 40 yards. Nine minutes later Brown’s corner was swung in and a deflection from a defender saw the ball strike the post. The resulting play saw Craig Pritchard’s shot comfortably saved.

Whilst the first 15 minutes was all Denbigh Chirk did have a chance just moments later, as Adam Williams had the freedom of the Denbigh left channel and was presented one-on-one with Aaron Jones but his effort was saved superbly.

With 23 gone Max McLaughlin has a side-footed shot inside the box fly just wide as the home side began putting pressure on the Town backline.

Chances began to dwindle in the latter stages of the half but things erupted just after the half-hour mark when Brown appeared to be struck by a flailing elbow, Town manager Dewi Llion protested and received a booking.

With tensions calmed Denbigh carved out a chance ten minutes before the break when a clipped ball into Walker saw the forward rifle an effort at goal only for a defender to make a superb block to deny a surefire goal.

The final chance of the half fell to Middlehurst who couldn’t direct an effort on target from point-blank range following a Chirk corner. The Chirk forward was involved in the final stages when he went in late on Walker, sparking a skirmish between himself and Dan Parry-Jones that saw both receive a yellow.

Half-Time: Chirk AAA 0-0 Denbigh Town

The second half began with Chirk coming the closest so far, as Tristan Lloyd picked up the ball and struck the top of the crossbar from distance.

Denbigh made their first change replacing Walker with Olly Hansen, as they chased the opening goal that followed just five minutes later.

Weir picked it up on the left of the edge of the box before hitting an audacious effort into the top right corner of the goal to give Denbigh the lead they so desperately wanted.

14 minutes later Weir almost had a second from a similar position but this time the ball flashed just wide of Ollie Fairbrother’s goal. Josh Lock came on for his debut and impressed with his direct running and effort in the final stages.

Brown had the chance to double the lead with just over ten minutes to play when Pritchard’s cross met his head but he couldn’t steer it on target.

Chirk put up a fight putting Denbigh under the cosh in spells but in reality, things were comfortable and Denbigh picked up their second win of the league campaign.
