Denbigh Town boss Dewi Llion celebrated his 150th game in charge of the club by ending Airbus’ unbeaten league record.
Second-half goals from Matthew Worrall and Paul Fleming sank the visitors on a scorching hot evening at Central Park.
Dewi handed starts once again to Josh Lock whilst Worrall also kept his place following a return from injury. On the bench two 16-year old’s were present with Owen Herbert and a potential senior debut for Rhys Lloyd.
The game began in 23-degree heat with every ounce of humidity felt by those on the pitch. The first chance came on 9 minutes as George Peers broke down the middle before slamming the ball against the inside of Aaron Jones’ left post.
Chances were at a premium and following a short water break it Peers once again could only find the woodwork with yet another effort.
Sam Rickett was next to have a go after some neat footwork on the left before dragging a shot well wide of Jones’ net.
Denbigh finally carved out a chance in the opening period with three minutes to spare before the break. Craig Pritchard did well down the left before crossing for Ben Lockley - making his 50th appearance for the club - but his header was deflected out for a corner that came to nothing.
The play of the game came in stoppage time in the first half as Lock picked up the ball deep in his own half before beating defender after defender on a superb run that ended with him just failing to get a shot away in the Airbus box.
Half-Time: Denbigh Town 0-0 Airbus UK Broughton
Though it was Airbus that dominated large spells in the first half, Denbigh began brightest in the second. Harry Lockley made a run down the left on 48 minutes and crossed low for Worrall who hit one on the turn that was comfortably saved.
Eight minutes later, however, Worrall made no mistake. Fed the ball from the right he shaped himself for an effort just inside the box and curled the ball into the top right corner leaving the goalkeeper stranded. Town had the lead and Worrall his first goal of the new campaign.
Denbigh didn’t rest on that lead, and chances continued to flow through Weir who picked the ball up in the middle of the Aribus half, drifted left and had a pop saved well. Ryan Kershaw almost opened his account for the club on 70 minutes when his rasping effort from 25-yards was palmed away.
Heading into the final ten minutes the game was on a knife edge but when captain Paul Fleming was introduced with fifteen to go his experience and fitness shone through. With four minutes to play, he received the ball from Lock on the left of the box and smashed the ball low into the bottom right to double the advantage.
In stoppage time 16-year-old Rhys Lloyd made his senior debut as Denbigh made a double switch with Lloyd and Herbert coming on for the final minutes.
The 352 in attendance certainly liked what they saw as Town saw the game home and made it three wins on the spin for the first time this season.
The referee blew the whistle for full-time and Airbus’ 100% win record for the JD Cymru North ended as Denbigh celebrated the boss’ milestone in style.
Denbigh are next in action on September 16th away to Cerrigydrudion in the JD Welsh Cup.
