Denbigh Town’s five game unbeaten run came to an end as Porthmadog claimed all three points in Gwynedd.
Shaun Cavanagh’s brace was the difference despite Matthew Worrall’s leveller in the opening period.
Dewi Llion was forced into a couple of changes with Harry Lockley suspended and replaced by Craig Rogers whilst Craig Pritchard pulled up in the warm-up and was replaced by Paul Fleming.
Porthmadog started the brighter in torrential conditions and carved out the first chance when Danny Brookwell was put through on goal and forced Aaron Jones into a superb stop with just a couple of minutes gone.
Denbigh’s first chance came with 11 minutes gone when Nathan Brown delivered a free-kick from the left and Ben Lockley’s header deflected behind.
Brookwell had the chance to take the lead for Port three minutes later as a ball over the top found him before he scooped it over Jones and just over the cross bar.
The opening half an hour was all Porthmadog who had the lions share of possession and plenty of chances, but they almost went a goal down when Ryan Kershaw’s long ball confused the back-line as Brown looked to nip in, but he could only win a corner as the defence gathered themselves.
Eventually with 36 minutes gone Port did have the lead, as Cavanagh on the left drifted towards goal before smashing home to give his side the lead.
That lead however, lasted just 60 seconds. Matthew Worrall picked it up in the middle of the opposition half before gliding through the defence and finishing low to reply instantly.
Half-Time: Porthmadog 1-1 Denbigh Town
The first half saw a few chances but the second saw plenty. Denbigh began the opening stages on top and in reality should have led.
Josh Lock first of all did well on the right pulling the trigger to win the first of a series of five corners within a couple of minutes. Worrall almost made it two when he followed up a spilt ball but the ball trickled behind whilst Tom Weir’s quick feet beat a defender before his low effort was turned behind by a defender.
On the hour mark those of a Denbigh persuasion were stunned at how Town didn’t take the lead. First of all, Lock had the ball fed to him from Brown on the left and just yards out at the goal at his mercy, but couldn’t settle his feet and fluffed his lines. Minutes later a ball from Sion Jones out wide was met by the head of Worrall but he couldn’t direct his effort on target from close range.
Port made Denbigh pay, as Cavanagh made progress down the right before shifting inside and drilling one into the bottom corner on the break with 66 minutes gone.
Town made changes as Keiron Roberts was introduced in place of Fleming to make his 50th league appearance and he played a part in regaining control of the ball, whilst Jake Walker came on for Brown to mark a century of league games for Town. Meanwhile, Olly Hansen replaced Lock.
Denbigh didn’t give in and continued to press, a deep ball from Kershaw was spilt by the keeper before Walker was just beaten to it by the Port custodian, denying a dream celebration for the striker.
Five minutes of stoppage time were added but Denbigh would play it with ten men as Kershaw was sent off for what looked to be an off-the-ball incident.
The best chance in the closing stages fell to Porthmadog as Morgan Owen dragged a shot wide on the counter when he really should have scored.
The referee blew his whistle and Town’s run of wins came to an end.
