- Back-to-Back League Wins for Town

Denbigh Town issued the perfect response to last weekend’s cup exit with a convincing victory over Porthmadog.

Goals from Josh Lock, Paul Fleming and Nathan Brown secured the three points against Port at Central Park, avenging their loss at Y Traeth earlier this season.

Dewi Llion handed a full debut to Dion Gibbins whilst Sion Jones returned to the XI, there were also places on the bench for Jimmy McHarrie for the first time as well as other new signing Kyle Cooper.

Town began the game brightly and showed real purpose going forward, carving out a chance within three minutes when Billy Holmes’ cross found the head of Fleming but Oli Fairbrother dealt with it in the visitors’ goal.

However, as we reached the nine minute mark Town found themselves in front, as Fleming fed the ball to Lock inside the box, he shaped to shoot before drilling an effort into the bottom left corner.

Though a dominant display from Town, Port did have opportunities. Charley McMillan beat the offside trap and ran through on goal but somehow missed the target. Denbigh response came within five minutes when with 22 gone, Brown crossed for the onrushing Gibbins who couldn’t keep his effort down.

Sion Jones is searching for his first goal of the campaign and almost had it with half an hour gone, Matthew Worrall did well on the right before squaring it to Jones on the edge of the box, he swept the ball goalwards but Fairbrother did superbly to tip it over the bar.

Just before the break Town should have made it two as Worrall slid the ball into Fleming who on the right of the box juked and dummied the goalkeeper before somehow putting his shot wide of the mark. Two minutes later Worrall was put through with only the goalkeeper to beat but somehow his effort found the arms of Fairbrother.

Half-Time: Denbigh Town 1-0 Porthmadog

Denbigh began the half in similar fashion to the first by threatening the visitors' goal, Lock had a low shot saved before a follow-up from Worrall was also denied by the custodian.

On 51 minutes Worrall had another golden chance as Fleming fed him through but with only Fairbrother to beat he managed to drag his shot wide. However, Town would eventually find that all-important second.

Ben Lockley found himself on the ball on the left of the box and played a smart ball to the skipper Fleming, the experienced forward rifled the ball into the roof of the net to finally find the second breakthrough.

Now with a lot to do Porthmadog had to get into gear. Former Town forward Jacob Barratt stood over a free-kick 25-yards out and shaved the side netting with his effort. Barratt had another chance on 66 minutes when Gethin Thomas ran through before being denied superbly by Jones, whilst the former’s rebound was expertly dealt with by Lockley.

With just under 20 minutes to play Porthmadog finally had one back, Dan Brookwell’s corner caused chaos in the box and Nathan Williams bundled it home at the back post.

Now things were nervy, and Denbigh knew they’d need another to quash any inkling of a Porthmadog comeback. Brown was just wide of the mark less than 60 seconds after the visitors’ goal, as his curled shot flashed by the face of goal.

Fleming was troubling the Port backline and crossed well for Lock on 81 minutes, the youngster had his effort thwarted before substitute Owen Davies’ rebound header was denied.

Eventually though the further pressure told. Davies picked the ball up in the middle of the park before spreading a superb ball to Brown, the forward ran on to it and slotted it home into the bottom left corner to wrap up proceedings,

Town now have a quick turnaround with another match at Central Park on Tuesday against Gresford Athletic.
