- Fantastic Five Second Half Locks Down Three Points

Denbigh Town hit a staggering five second-half goals including a 15-minute Josh Lock hatrick to pile on the misery for basement side Chirk, who have now had their relegation from the division confirmed.

Lock’s hatrick along with a brace for Matthew Worrall and Paul Fleming's effort swept aside the visitors who were up to half-time of good value.

Manager Dewi Llion made one change to the XI that lost at Airbus on Saturday as Fleming returned to the side in the place of Sion Jones.

Fleming’s return marked his 75th appearance for the club in all competitions, whilst Worrall marked the match with his 50th.

The first half to put it kindly could be described as a slow burner, with opportunities limited for both sides throughout. Chirk had the first sight of goal, however, where on six minutes Jack Edwards fired over from close range.

Town’s first real chance fell on 21 minutes and it found the back of the net. Billy Holmes fed the ball to Owen Davies who in turn crossed for Fleming, his deft touch took it beyond the keeper and nestled into the bottom corner.

It looked like the opener would kick Town into gear who almost had a second five minutes later when Worrall drove the ball low across the face of goal where an outstretched Davies couldn’t manage to get to it at the back post.

With Town looking like they may well add to their scoreline the visitors hit back. As 28 minutes elapsed on the clock Max McLaughlin, the visitors’ top scorer, smashed the ball home after an initial save via Jones from an Edwards effort.

The burst of seven minutes with two goals and chances at either end gave hope for a more entertaining encounter, but in reality only a Worrall effort with his back to goal just before half time, which trickled just wide troubled either goalkeeper.

Half-Time: Denbigh Town 1-1 Chirk AAA

Level at the break, this one could have gone either way, and it did, that way being Denbigh’s and significantly so. Within two minutes of the restart Owen Davies hit a sidewinder inches wide from the left of the box. Within seven minutes, Town reestablished their lead. Lock picked the ball up from Davies before running through and thumping it home.

Suddenly, the 20-year old was absolutely relentless. On 56 minutes he forced the keeper into a stop having been put through but took far too much time to pick his spot and the chance passed him by. Moments later Worrall found Lock who again at a tight angle forced the keeper to deny.

Town were fluid in attack and looking confident, but suddenly things went from the sublime to the ridiculous, With 65 minutes gone a poor clearance found Worrall who, from the halfway line, smashed the ball over the keeper to net his first of the night.

A minute later Lock had his second, before staggeringly he grabbed his third for three goals in as many minutes for Denbigh.

Town now with five made changes including introducing Morgan Thomas-Sadler who played his first game since January and second game since August. He almost had a goal on his return as the ball came in from the right and he swept it on target, but it was a simple one to deal with.

Heading into the dying embers Town pressed for a sixth, and they were lining up for it in the box at times but efforts from substitute Sion Jones, Worrall and Gibbins fired wide or over.

Eventually, in stoppage time they found the icing on the cake, and what a strike it was. Worrall took the ball on the bounce and volleyed home for a second remarkable goal on a landmark appearance.

Town remain fifth in the JD Cymru North and head to Holywell Town next Saturday.
