Denbigh Town put an end to their losing run on Monday as Owen Davies’ late header secured a point against Caersws.
Denbigh have never won at Latham Park whilst Caersws have never won a home league match against them. The obvious result? Draw.
The Bluebirds took the lead via Craig Williams in the first half that saw Town below par, but Denbigh rallied after the break and took a well earned point in Powys.
Following a pitch inspection at Caersws’ Recreation Ground on the morning of the game, the match was left in doubt as the surface was deemed unplayable. However, both sides agreed quickly to move the match to Newtown’s Latham Park to avoid further fixture congestion.
Dewi Llion named two changes to the side with Olly Hansen replacing Josh Lock who picked up a knock at the same ground nine days previous, whilst Morgan Thomas-Sadler started his first match for the first-team since August.
The game began with both sides feeling eachother out with no sights of goal until a deadly move from the hosts within ten minutes. Following a single effort from Nathan Brown that didn’t trouble the goalkeeper, Caersws were out the traps with a superb break. Craig Harris sprinted through before laying the ball across to Craig Williams, who tapped home into an empty net.
Denbigh despite being second-best throughout the first period did have chances. Dion Gibbins let fly from range before it deflected to Brown, who in turn fired just over on 20 minutes.
Caersws continued to put pressure on Town and a dangerous corner came into the Denbigh box that was headed wide by Ben Jones.
Hoping to grab a leveller before the break defender Dan Parry-Jones worked well in midfield to nip in and head the ball towards Hansen, he who scooped the ball to the right of the box for Davies who was brought down but referee Patrick Wilding gave nothing either way.
In stoppage time the Bluebirds were head in hands at not doubling their advantage as a quick counter saw the ball fall kindly to Callum Graybrook who volleyed over the bar with the goal gaping.
Half-Time: Caersws 1-0 Denbigh Town
Town were a different team after the break and started as they meant to go on by bombarding the opposition box. Davies was a live wire jinking his way into the box on the left before hitting one wide off balance within the first five minutes.
However, Caersws were still dangerous and Aaron Jones had to be on hand to deny Neil Mitchell who given the freedom of the box was denied by Town custodian after another quick counter. The resulting corner saw a smart routine that lled to Jones making a brilliant stop to deny an effort from a body in the box.
Brown was next to see an effort thwarted when he made inroads from the right channel into the centre just outside the box, he hit a powerful effort that looked destined to find the top right corner before Steffan Jones made an outstanding save.
Denied but not defeated, Denbigh continued wave after wave of attack with Davies and Ben Lockley both having shots deflect wide, the latter twice as he surged forward from right back.
Again, whilst Denbigh swarmed forward the hosts were still dangerous, Jones made another great save to deny a Sam Phillips before a long range effort kisses the top of the Denbigh bar.
With five minutes left to play Denbigh won a corner, Brown swung it in before skipper Paul Fleming nodded it back and Davies showed just how much he wanted it by beating everyone in the air to see it home from six yards out.
Not in any mood to just accept a late point, Dewi Llion’s side went for it. Gibbins let fly from 25-yards in stoppage time which deflected and almost deceived the goalkeeper, but he just about stopped it for a corner. The resulting set piece was swung in and Davies couldn’t squeeze his header home at the back post.
It ended a run of three losses on the spin before Denbigh return to mid-Wales on Saturday to face Llanidloes.
