DENBIGH TOWN 0-4 HOLYWELL Denbigh’s recent unbeaten league run came to a disappointing end with a home defeat to the Wellmen of Holywell.

It was Holywell who started the brighter and took the lead after 2 minutes when a Denbigh free kick inside the Holywell half saw the Denbigh team push their defenders forward hoping for an early goal. The free kick was cleared by the Holywell defence and on the break Denbigh’s defence was exposed to allow Paul Williams to fire home to give the visitors an early lead.
Denbigh responded with Jake Eyre having an opportunity from just outside the box but his fierce left foot shot was well saved by Holywell’s keeper Rushton

It was Holywell who were much the better team as the half wore on and they were unlucky not to go two up when Tony Davies made a goal line clearance from a Holywell header.
However the Holywell pressure told on 29 minutes when their recent signing Jamie McDaid beat defender Jack Riley and took the ball into the penalty area to fire a low shot passed Hill Dunt in the Denbigh goal.
Denbigh were trying to get back into the game but Holywell’s defence was strong and limited Denbigh to half chances. Swarbrick and Eyre both had opportunities which came to nothing.

Holywell’s midfield were dominant and on 37 minutes some good build up lead to a cross which Denbigh defended poorly by laying a ball on for Brady McGilloway to slide home to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.
Two minutes later Denbigh’s Keiran Gaul was fouled in the Holywell penalty box and Jake Eyre stepped up to take the penalty kick. His well struck left foot shot was well saved by Rushton in the Holywell goal and it wasn’t going to be Denbigh’s day as the Wellmen went in deservedly up 3-0 at half time.

The second half saw Denbigh create more chances and Aaron Hassall and Craig Pritchard came on for Alan Bull and Keiran Gaul as they looked to change things to try and pull the game back. However on 61 minutes the game was put beyond doubt when Matty Hurdman fired in Holywell’s fourth.
This was an afternoon when the Town just could not get going against a well organised Holywell team. Denbigh had a lot of endeavour and kept trying but they lacked the impetus to make any chances count. A disappointing performance and they now stand 11th in the League on 23 points. Their next game is at Mold Alex on Saturday 11th February, kick off 2.30pm.
