Denbigh Town Ladies capped off another superb campaign with a Runners-Up finish in the NEWFA Women’s League East.
Sunday saw the season come to a close with an away trip to Northop Hall with Aled Davies’ side knowing a win would secure second spot behind Champions Berriew. Goals from Paige Perkins, Ceri Purvis, Lucy Morris (hatrick), Beth Kell and Lowri Claybrook saw Town run out 7-0 winners in the Bank Holiday Sunshine.
The win to see out the campaign meant the side ended the season with five wins on the spin in the league having seen off Welshpool, Airbus (twice) and Coedpoeth scoring a total of 28 goals in those games and keeping four clean sheets in the final five.
Town began the season in red-hot form with a 6-0 win over Coedpoeth on the opening day at Central Park. The Cup wasn’t kind to Denbigh who exited the NEWFA Women’s Cup and Welsh Cup at the first hurdle, but the league form grew with three wins from the opening trio of matches.
In the Betty Pickering Cup, a tough group consisting of Denbigh, Caernarfo, Llanustymdwy and Kinmel Bay saw Town finish third and qualify for the Shield, making the Semi-Final but losing out in stoppage time to Henllan.
Town and local rivals Henllan had some battles in the league, meeting away from home in September where despite going 3-0 down after 34 minutes, Town replied with four second half goals to take the points. Revenge was sweet for Henllan though, who hit six at Central Park in January.
Assistant Manager Aled Davies took over the role of manager following the departure of Ellen Lawson to become the fourth manager in the sides’ 17 year history, and after a rocky start the side bounced back starting with a 12-0 win over Welshpool in January. Town lost just twice in their final ten games in all competitions having lost five previously on the bounce.
The red-hot form launched the side back up to second spot, above Henllan and six points behind eventual winners Berriew.
In the league, Ceri Purvis finished as top scorer with 11 goals in as many games closely followed by Amber Hellon (10), Beth Kell, Lucy Morris (both nine) and Catrin Davies (7). In all competitions it was Kell who took the Golden Boot netting 14 goals in 21 games.
Meanwhile Carla Rizzi captained the side alongside taking over as Assistant Manager, a role she’ll take on more of next term as she steps away from playing.
The side now takes a well earned break before starting all over again in September.
