MATCH PREVIEW - Rhostyllen V Denbigh Town - Sat 13th May - 2.30pm k.o

Iwan Jones11 May 2023 - 17:58

By Ollie Williams

Well, this is it. The final game of the 2022/23 Ardal North-West campaign and one of the biggest matches in Denbigh Town’s 143 year history. Win and you’re champions.

Key Details

Rhostyllen v Denbigh Town
Ground: Clywedog Park, Wrexham (LL14 4HE)
Kick-Off: 14:30
Admisison: £3

The Stakes

Last weekend Denbigh had nine possible result combinations and three possibilities, this weekend it’s simple. A point is needed away to Rhostyllen as a minimum requirement to win the division, with rivals Bangor 1876 finishing their campaign last weekend.

Denbigh were six minutes away from winning the title at Central Park last weekend but Bangor’s 84th minute winner at home to Hawarden sent the decider to the final day. Denying top spot also means that should Town sit there on Saturday evening, it would be the first time all season.

Here’s every outcome you need to know going into Saturday.

Denbigh Win - Denbigh win the title
Denbigh Draw - Denbigh win the title (via goal difference)
Denbigh Lose - Bangor win the title - Denbigh enter a promotion playoff.

Form
After back-to-back losses for the first time since August, Denbigh followed up with two league wins on the trot including a final home match at Central Park where Dewi Llion’s side hit four past Nantlle Vale. Goals from Craig Pritchard, Matthew Worrall (brace) and Nathan Brown sealed a 4-1 win. It followed up an impressive win over Llanrwst United as Brown and Pritchard got Town back to winning ways after the Rwsters had taken a first half lead.

Rhostyllen currently sit bottom of the Ardal North-West on 15 points but have really picked up their form in recent weeks. However, last weekend’s trip to Llangefni ended in a loss despite two goals from Adam Williams as they fell to the Islanders 5-2. It was their first loss in five games following an impressive unbeaten run in April where they picked up ten of their 15 points in the league this term with wins over Felinheli (twice), Llandudno Albion and drew with Llay Welfare.

Head-to-Head

We last met back in February at Central Park where Dewi Llion’s side smashed past the ‘Village’ 8-1 with goals from Pritchard (hat-trick), Paul Fleming (brace) and Worrall (hat-trick). Rhostyllen’s current iteration was formed in 2015 and the two sides have met three times previously, with Denbigh winning on all occasions. In April 2022 Denbigh won 4-1 at home after our first ever meeting which came earlier in the 2021/22 campaign, winning 2-0 at Vicarage Hill.

Of course, we won’t be visiting Vicarage Hill a second time, with the match moved to Brickfield Rangers’ Clywedog Park. We last played there in February when facing Brickfield, recording a 3-1 success.
