Llanrwst United v Denbigh Town
Date: 16/11/2024
Kick-Off: 14:00
Location: Gwydir Park
Competition: JD Welsh Cup Third Round
Form
Denbigh come into the game on the back of two defeats on the trot in the JD Cymru North. Last time out they hosted Airbus UK Broughton with the Wingmakers running out 4-0 winners at Central Park. A week previous a stoppage time goal saw Guilsfield take three points at Clos Mytton in a 4-3 loss. Town’s last win came three weeks ago at home to Llandudno, hitting six in a 6-2 success.
Llanrwst are currently on a six-game unbeaten run having not lost since the back end of September. Last weekend they hosted NFA in the Ardal North-West where Denbigh’s Olly Hansen, on a temporary switch to NFA, netted at Gwydir Park. This will be the Roosters’ sixth home game on the spin with victories over Nantlle Vale, Felinheli, Cerrigydrydion and St Asaph City coming throughout October and November.
Cup Route
Town were handed a bye in the First Round after finishing in the top eight in the JD Cymru North last season before drawing Llangefni at Central Park. Harrison Bellis netted a brace alongside goals from Nathan Brown and Paul Fleming to advance in a 4-2 win.
Llanrwst began their journey back in July with a First Qualifying Round win away at Rhos United before winning 3-0 away at Cemaes Bay. They faced league rivals Menai Bridge Tigers in the First Round proper advancing with 5-1 victory before a Second Round victory over Cerrigydrydion, winning 2-1 with two goals in the final ten minutes from Callum Parry.
Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between the two sides since May 2023. As Denbigh raced towards the league title and promotion to the JD Cymru North, they travelled to Gwydir Park in desperate need of three points. Sam Thomas gave the Roosters the lead before Nathan Brown levelled on 24 minutes. In the second half Craig Pritchard scored a brace to take the points. We met in the JD Welsh Cup that season at Central Park with Town winning 6-1. Llanrwst did pick up a win over Town that season at Central Park, running out 2-0 winners on the opening day of the campaign.
Stat Pack
This will be Denbigh’s first game in the Third Round of the Welsh Cup since 2018. It’s just the fourth time reaching this round in the last half-century. The previous three games came against Cambrian & Clydach (2018), Barry Town United (2015), Port Talbot (2008) and Rhyl (1978).
The last Third Round win for Denbigh came in 1972 with a 2-0 win over Chirk.
