Denbigh Town return to league action on Saturday afternoon with a trip to a rare opponent in Newtown.
Dewi Llion’s side will be looking to put aside the heartache of the Welsh Cup with a statement result over a Newtown side playing outside of the JD Cymru Premier for the first time since it’s inception.
Form
Town come into the game on the back of to trips to Porthmadog. After our Welsh Cup tie was abandoned at 4-1 up on Saturday we returned on Wednesday night where a drama fuelled end saw Gwion Dafydd net on 95 minutes before Porth levelled two minutes later before advancing on penalties. In the league Denbigh were last in action two weeks ago having run out 5-1 winners over Flint Mountain at Central Park.
Newtown faced Berriew last time out in the Central Wales FA Cup advancing in a 6-0 win. They faced Rhyl in their most recent league clash where the mid-Wales side picked up three points in a 5-2 win at Belle Vue. They currently sit fourth with one defeat in their opening seven games since relegation from the top flight last season.
Head to Head
This will be the first-ever league meeting between the two sides and just the third game in our collective history.
Our most recent game came in the Welsh Cup 19 years ago this weekend, where Newtown won 4-2 at Central Park in the Second Round with Rich Williams-Cooke striking a brace for Town. The first and only other game between the sides came in Newtown back in 1914 where Newtown won 1-0. It would be our last game in the competition for five years owing to the outbreak of the First World War.
Stat Pack
A win for Denbigh would make this the best-ever start to a season in the Cymru North or Cymru Alliance (tier two).
Matthew Worrall could make his 50th league appearance for Denbigh Town this weekend.
Worrall requires three more goals for 50 in all competitions for the club.
Nathan Brown is now fourth on the all-time scorers list and requires 10 more to enter the top three.
Denbigh are looking for a first ever win over Newtown at the third attempt.
