Our Chairman Shon Powell is not the easiest of people to meet these days so we had a chat over the phone in between his meetings in Dubai.
Firstly, Shon is fifty nine and has lived in Denbigh since he was five. He struggled through school with Dyslexia and left aged fifteen with no qualifications.
He now runs five companies, with his brother Nick, including Craig Bragdy Design which was started by their parents Rhys and Jean. The company designs, manufactures and installs hand made ceramic artwork for swimming pools and wall murals in places such as palaces, government buildings, hotels and private residences and have work in over thirty countries around the World. Another company they own is Lockstock Self Storage which they started from scratch and is now the biggest container storage company in the UK. They have off shoots such as TakeStock Van Hire and LockStock Fireworks which are also successful in their own right. Lockstock are a major sponsor in the North Wales world of football.
He has always loved sport even at a very young age and started supporting Manchester United, primarily Shon admits, because his older brother did. He was asked if he goes to games and he informed us that he will watch United when he can and is a season ticket holder. He added "I went to my first United game at the age of ten with my lifelong friend Mike Jones. We didn't tell our parents where we were going and caught the bus to Rhyl, train to Manchester Piccadilly and then the bus from there to Old Trafford. We watched the game and took the same route back not arriving home until after 10pm! What a day! "
He decided at about eighteen that his sporting talent was better suited to rugby rather than football and joined Denbigh Rugby Club. He did very well and is proud of the fact that he became the first Denbigh player ever to be selected for North Wales. Work commitments took over though and Shon had to stop playing regularly quite soon afterwards.
What about family ? " I met my beautiful wife, Lesley, in 1978. I remember the exact time and date which was soon after Christmas at The Stables nightclub in St Asaph. We married three years later and have been very happily married ever since with two children Rhian and Tom."
Shon was reminded that he became a rugby player so how did he get involved in Denbigh Town FC ? " I got involved in the football club twenty years ago in 1997, when my son Tom, was ten and started playing for Denbigh Town Juniors. I joined the committee and after twelve months became chairman of the junior section. I was then asked to join the main committee as the junior representative and from there was asked to join the senior committee proper. I was vice chairman for a while then became Chairman about ten years ago "
Was Shon particularly proud of anything he has achieved at the Club " Yes ! I will be honest and tell you that, yes,I am proud. So much has been done in the last ten years. The drainage has been improved, the boundary around the pitch has been sorted with new posts and rails, the outside hard standing around the pitch, the dugouts and area that side of the pitch, the tarmacing and car parking area, the electricity supply has been improved, the floodlights, the outside perimeter fencing and we have just completed the new spectator stand. The equipment for the groundsman, Derek, has been improved and facilities for the juniors too. We probably have more company advertising hoardings pitch side than most clubs and the whole thing is looking good. Yes, I will take that. I am proud. "
What about on the pitch ? " Again .. some great memories. It took us six years to get back to second tier football after getting relegated. We did it in style though under Cookie in 2014. Undefeated all season and winning the title at home by beating second placed and local rivals Holywell under the new lights was amazing. The Word Cup final with Perry and Elfed as the management team was unforgettable. We were the first second tier club to reach the final and to take a thousand Denbigh fans there and have it on live TV was fantastic. Loved it. This season we are flying high with Eddie in charge."
Anything else Shon ? " I would like to wish our sponsors, our committee and all volunteers, the managers and coaches and everyone who plays for or supports Denbigh Town Football Club at all age groups a Very Merry Christmas and all the luck in the World for 2018 "
Happy Xmas !
