Club President Clwyd Williams

This week we focus on one of our most respected and longest serving committee members - Club President Clwyd Williams.

Clw Bach is 65 years old, born and bred in Denbigh and is married with two children and four grandchildren.

He has worked with Denbighshire County Council for 47 years as a Local Government Officer and has been a part time Youth Club Leader for 33 years! He retires from both at the end of May this year which will be a huge milestone for someone who has led such a busy life. We asked Clwyd if he found retiring daunting or was he looking forward to it to which he replied " Not sure but I should be OK. My mate has retired so we plan to do plenty of stuff together. We intend to do more in Snowdonia. We walked up Snowdon a few months ago. "

Clwyd has always kept himself fit and as well as being a keen walker he is into mountain biking too. Every weekend he and a friend will cycle from Denbigh towards Llangwyfan and continue up to the top of the Clwydian hills before cycling across towards Bodfari and back to Denbigh. A very tough, arduous ride which Clwyd can do in around three hours.

A kick about with his grandchildren is the sort of football Clwyd participates in now but in his day Clwyd was an excellent midfielder well known in football circles. He was asked when he first started playing for Denbigh Town " I was picked for the first team by manager Gordon Gunson when I was sixteen and then played regularly." he replied " .. and then again when John Trefor Roberts became manager. We won the Wrexham Area Division 1 title on numerous occasions and the Wrexham Area League Cup. After Denbigh I went to play for Caernarfon and we won the Welsh League Title and the Welsh Intermediate Cup. I then went on to play for Rhyl and Colwyn Bay."

Football is this man's passion and he has done so much for Denbigh Town F. C. When his playing days were over he managed the first team, the reserves and the third team before becoming part of the committee. Even here he has been Club Secretary [ twice ], chairman and vice - chairman before becoming Club President. As well as being an active committee member he is one of the match day team at Central Park assisting with stewarding and cleaning the changing rooms etc. Every club needs a Clwyd Williams and we are so grateful to be able to call on his knowledge and experience.

It is obvious that Clwyd has seen a lot of changes over the years and when asked about it he said " Yes, I have. The changes to the structure of football in North Wales is still going on and the changes to our ground have been huge when you look at the floodlights and the new stand. Going forward I think we need to make more use of our promising youngsters and would like to see them featured in the first team squad more often."

During the 2016/2017 season Bob Paton, Chairman and vice president of the Huws Gray Alliance league and President of the North Wales Coast FA presented Clwyd with an award in recognition of his services to football in North Wales.

We are lucky to have you Clwyd and everyone at the club congratulates you on your impending retirement. All the best !!!
