We get to know left back Joe Culshaw

After a short break we are resuming our Who is Who series by getting to know left back Joe Culshaw a little better.

24 yr old Joe is originally from Carrog near Corwen but for the past year or so has lived with his girlfriend Ashleigh and her mother Beverley at Pentre Broughton near Wrexham.

Joe has always been into fitness and training and for nearly three years worked at Pure Gym in Wrexham as a Personal Trainer where he took classes in Spin, Body Pump, Kettlebell, Circuit etc. However he took the brave decision to set up his own fitness business at the back end of last year and opened a studio at a warehouse in Pentre Broughton known as Cul-Fit. The hours can be long and unsociable with group sessions as well as ''one to one " but Joe is already enjoying the venture saying " It has been very good so far and am enjoying doing things my own way and making my own decisions. Nothing like being your own boss Ha Ha "

We asked Joe to tell us about his football. What clubs has he played for previously ? He explained " I played for Ruthin as a young kid before being picked up by Wrexham. I was there, then, from u12s all the way through to u16s but unfortunately was not offered a Youth Training. I did get an offer from Morecombe, though, where I did YT for two years before turning professional. I was not offered a new contract but then signed for Bangor City for two years with Nev Powell. The first year involved European football and playing in Iceland against FC Stjarnan on my 21st birthday was an amazing experience. After that I signed for Cefn Druids and then went to play for Flint for two years where I think I played my best football. I then decided to look again at an English league with Radcliffe FC and played a friendly match. Nev Powell became manager at Aberystwyth Town then and got in touch. Things sounded right and I moved there with the intention of playing at a high level. To be perfectly honest I was not playing as much as I wanted and then Eddie got in touch about coming to Denbigh Town."

Joe was asked if it was a difficult decision to come to Central Park to which he replied " I met with Eddie to discuss things properly. This was the first time a manager had talked like that to me for any length of time face to face. During the hour of chatting he talked of the direction of the club, the people behind the scenes, the staff and the other players. I was sold. No second thought."

This talented left back had another good game at Penrhyncoch on Saturday defending well and putting over a number of crosses going forward both with his trusted left peg and right foot. In fact Joe seems to have settled down very quickly. We asked him what helped him ease into the squad? Joe replied " Yes, I have settled in very well with everyone. I knew a lot of the lads as I have played against them many times but what really impresses me is the work ethic Eddie has installed into the team. Everyone works hard for each other and there's a good togetherness. I am really enjoying my time at Denbigh Town. Games such as Airbus at home and Rhyl away have been the stand out for myself. I think people had classed Denbigh out this season but with the players we have we want to be up top shouting ! "

You mention the Rhyl game. You scored a great curling free kick there. Is this something you practice? " To be honest, when I signed it was one of the first things I wanted to nail down. I took set pieces previously, scoring a few goals and creating some. I enjoyed the goal against Rhyl because of the timing as much as anything else. I scored to make it 3 - 2 right at the end of the game. "

There seems to be a couple of new fans around the place since Joe signed for Denbigh back in October last year " Ha! My 70 yr old taid, Gwyn, never misses a game home or away. You will see him keeping warm by sipping from his hip flask. The ' old man ' has never missed one of my games either - ever since I could kick a football."

It seems that Joe is happy with his move to Denbigh. He is playing well and has become an important part of the squad. He added " With all the support from the fans, the coaches, the togetherness within the players and the people behind the scenes, volunteers and staff I don't see why we can't challenge for the top."

Enjoy your game against your old team Flint next Saturday Joe. We are sure you will do well.

Thanks for the interview.
