- Town Ladies Exit Cup as Season Ends

Denbigh Town Ladies’ 2023/24 campaign came to an end on Sunday as Ellen Lawson’s side exited the Betty Pickering Cup at the Quarter-Final stage.

Despite a late consolation for striker Beth Kell the Ladies exit the competition and with the league season also concluded drop the curtain on their campaign.

Manager Lawson made a welcome of addition to the starting XI with Megan Edwards returning from a lengthy injury to travel to Angelsey, whilst Ceri Purvis was unavailable.

In a back-and-forth affair both sides showed plenty of purpose in the opening stages with the first chance falling to Denbigh after seven minutes. Lois Roberts, impressive since returning to the club in recent months crossed for Catrin Davies who’s header tested the goalkeeper.

Llangefni crafted a chance of their own four minutes later when a ball was clipped into the box but was put just wide by an onrushing attacker.

Though both sides were getting at eachother, clear cut chances were at a premium until the half hour mark when Jess Jones was through on the right before firing an effort across goal. Four minutes later, Jones wouldn’t make the same mistake when weaving through into the box before firing home.

Half-Time: Llangefni Town 1-0 Denbigh Town

In the second half the home sides showed their quality, coming out a different side to that of the first and putting Town under the cosh throughout. Twelve minutes in Jones doubled the lead with a superb free kick before completing her hatrick two minutes later.

With 22 left to play Jennifer Cox slid in to score a fourth and a cheap one to conceded on Denbigh’s part who now had a mountain to climb.

Never a side to give in, Town did flurry forward in the final 20 minutes and on 81 minutes Kell almost had one back when a sensational volley from distance struck the post.

Lowri Claybrook was next to go close when she got forward and made inroads into the box but dragged her shot past the far post from the right.

Into stoppage time Denbigh won a corner and after it was initially cleared Jess Duff put it back in for Kell who on the spin rifled it past the keeper.

Llangefni however went through and Denbigh’s great season came to a close.
