- Ladies off to a flyer

Denbigh Town Ladies began their NEWFA Women’s Football League East campaign with a sensational six at Central Park.

Goals from Lowri Claybrook, Catrin Davies (both braces), Lois Roberts and Paige Perkins sealed the win and an impressive clean sheet.

Assistant boss Aled Davies was called upon to take the reigns with Ellen Lawson away and named a squad with one debut, Abi Cooke - sister of men’s first team defender Max - at the heart of the defence.

Meanwhile, Carla Rizzi took the armband after being named as captain for the new season along with vice-skipper Jess Duff.

Denbigh began the game strong and continued it throughout, on three minutes the first chance came from a set piece that Claybrook stepped up for, hitting the effort inches over the bar to fire the first warning shot.

Claybrook, returning for her second season with the club, opened the scoring on 11 minutes when she sprinted forward and slotted past the goalkeeper for her - and Denbigh’s - first goal of the season.

On 19 minutes Town almost doubled the lead when Roberts went through one-on-one but goalkeeper Tiarna Bithell made the first of a string of superb saves.

After waves of pressure and missed opportunities Town finally had their second, Natalie Harrison crossed for Claybrook who hit the post from close range before Roberts picked up the scraps to net just before the half-hour mark.

Within 90 seconds of the restart, Denbigh secured their third, Claybrook busy throughout calmly swept the ball home in a brilliant start to the second period.

Now smelling blood Denbigh had to finish the chances they created having wasted a number in the first half. On the hour mark the difference was evident when Davies raced down the left channel before drilling the ball past the keeper.

Bithell in the visiting goal was, despite shipping four goals, on superb form and made a string of fine stops to deny the likes of Roberts, Harrison and Davies and was a standout on the pitch. However, he net was breached again with 79 minutes gone as Davies latched on to a through ball from Claybrook, rounded Bithell, and tapped into an empty net.

Paige Perkins, formerly Morris, playing for the first time since taking her husbands surname and giving birth came on as a substitute and marked the occasion with one of the goals of the game. She worked well to get into a great position in the box before hitting a pass first time with venom into the top left corner.

Town didn’t look done and Davies eyed a hatrick, but a pull back from Harrison saw Davies’ touch let her down before her effort was covered well by the goalkeeper.

The game came to a halt and Denbigh ran out deserved 6-0 winners in a season where they’ll hope to go one better than the runners-up finish last term.

They’re next in action next Sunday at home to Pwllheli in the NEWFA Cup.
