- Town record back-to-back wins

Denbigh Town Ladies made it back-to-back wins this weekend for the first time under manager Aled Davies in the Betty Pickering Cup.

A hatrick for forward Beth Kell saw off the West Wales visitors as Town also made it two clean sheets on the spin.

A week on from their 12-0 win over Welshpool, Denbigh faced Llanystumdwy in the final group stage match of the Betty Pickering Cup with the visitors already through with four wins and a draw in their five matches so far. Denbigh meanwhile needed a win and for Kinmel Bay to drop points at Caernarfon, but it wasn’t to be at the win takes Town to third, meaning they’ll enter the Shield competition with those not advancing to the latter stages of the Betty Pickering Cup.

Town began the game in control in what would be a theme throughout, with Lowri Claybrook, starting following injury for the first time since September immediately involved. She picked the ball up midway inside the visitors half before unleashing an effort to test the keeper from 25-yards.

It took 28 minutes for the first chance for Llanystumdwy with Annest Roberts lofting the ball over Town’s keeper from the edge of the box only for the ball to smash against the top of the crossbar.

It led to a flurry of chances with Denbigh next up two minutes later as Claybrook displayed brilliant skill in the middle of the park before shrugging off two defenders and curling the ball onto the right post. She continued her fine start by linking up well with Kell seeing the latter test the goalkeeper from a tight angle.

60 seconds after being denied Kell this time found the back of the net. Catrin Davies in her first start since November threaded a superb pass to Kell who ran through and calmly dispatched beyond Sara Lacey.

Kell had been a thorn in the visitors side throughout the half and quickly after grabbing her first she made it a double. On 38 minutes Claybrook’s excellent footwork allowed her to slide the ball forward to Kell who ran through and slotted home.

Half-Time: Denbigh Town 2-0 Llanystumdwy

The game appeared to mellow out in the second half with chances few and far between for either side, and in reality neither goalkeeper was tested until way beyond the hour mark. When it did come it was Kell again who was quickest to react when Claybrook’s free-kick deflected into her path inside the six yard box with Kell making it a terrific treble.

Town searched for a fourth but with the game beyond the visitors they both saw it out in a clean and spirited perfroemence, the only disappointment coming with Kinmel Bay’s 4-0 win at Caernarfon meaning Denbigh will need to settle for competing for the Shield after missing out on top two in the group.

Denbigh are next in action in two weeks time at home to Berriew in the NEWFA Women’s League East.
