A glorious advert for veterans football was to be found at Cae Nai on a pleasant Tuesday evening in front of a healthy crowd which included a group of youths on BMXs and Skipper Graham Owen’s better half and their dog George.

They would be treated to a topsy turvy affair which threatened to tip both ways before it was eventually decided in the favour of the home side. Caerwys more than played their part however and it was the away side who settled into the game initially, enjoying the majority of possession before marauding midfielder Dai Davies put the home side in front against the run of play after some excellent work from Dai Webster resulted in Davies neatly slotting home from 15 yards out.

Denbigh doubled their advantage through their talismanic captain as Owen controlled and finished smartly to give Denbigh a healthy lead in front of a clearly delighted George who is, to all intents and purposes, a very good boy.

Caerwys reacted strongly and they pulled one back deservedly as their dogged resilience saw them rewarded. The wanderers went in at the break reasonably happy with a 2-1 lead.

The second half saw the visitors come out with a point to prove and the game turned on its head as the away side equalised before getting their noses in front giving home boss John Clayton plenty to think about. A few changes saw Denbigh back in the ascendancy and that man Graham Owen put Wanderers back on level terms with a towering header.

The game was extremely open at this point with both sides looking for the win and it was Llansannan legend Dewi Jones who got it for the Wanderers with a lobbed finish which was celebrated wildly by the onlooking BMX enthusiasts.

The game finished 4-3 to the men in red and there were emotional scenes as George warmly embraced skipper Owen in the centre circle and everyone cheered.
