Denbigh sail into the Dragon Signs FAW Trophy Final

Iwan Jones18 Mar 2023 - 21:20

Bridgend Street 1- 8 Denbigh Town

A scintillating display from Denbigh saw them romp into the final of the Dragon Signs FAW Trophy with a truly emphatic performance. Six goals in a breath taking first half were followed by a more subdued second half with two goals being added to their tally . Goals came from all areas of the pitch with Jason Foulkes, Craig Pritchard, Nathan Brown, Jake Walker (2), Dan Parry-Jones , Ben Lockley and Sam Haddon all getting on the score sheet.

The team were supported by a large vociferous travelling crowd of Denbigh fans with two full coaches and several cars travelling to the Victoria Park, Llanidloes. The fans sang thoughout the game as the goals just kept on coming.

And so, Denbigh move into the final of a competition they last won back in 1924 where they will take on Trethomas Bluebirds of the Cardiff area in what promises to be an outstanding final at the end of April.

Denbigh’s opponents in the semi-final Bridgend Street play in the Tier 4 South Wales Alliance Premier League where they are in a mid-table position. However , like Denbigh they have games in hand on the teams above them and if they won these games, they could top their league. In the quarter final they had comprehensively beaten Rhos Aelwyd of the Tier 3 Ardal North East League 5-2 and Denbigh had prepared well for the match in the knowledge that they needed to keep up their momentum of a great winning run of games

Manager Dewi Llion Jones brought striker Jake Walker in for the suspended Matthew Worrall in what was the only change from the starting line up that won at Bangor 1876 in the League a week ago.

The game started with Denbigh on the front foot and quickly taking control of the game. In the first minute Jake Walker crossed from the right wing to Paul Fleming’s header which was safely gathered by Bridgend keeper Damo Lack.

On three minutes Denbigh had the lead when Jason Foulkes bent a shot from the edge of the box into the far right hand corner giving Lack no chance

Lack took a knock shortly after and had to receive treatment to a troublesome shoulder . However, he could do nothing about a thunderbolt shot on 20 minutes by Craig Pritchard from 18 yards which rifled into the net after a neat assist from Jake Walker.

The third goal came shortly after with some one touch football between Sion Jones and Walker before the ball was laid into the path of Nathan Brown to slot home

After 25 minutes of play it was 4-0 when Walker turned sharply and wrong footed Lack to place the ball into the foot of the net

At this point Lack who was still being troubled by his shoulder sadly had to leave the field with him handing his gloves to forward Jay Edwards with Paul Carro coming on as an outfield player.

The new keeper was helpless when after 40 minutes Nathan Brown swung in a corner to Jake Walker on the back post for the striker to head the ball back across goal for Dan Parry Jones to have the simplest of tasks to head home from close range and make it 5-0.

With half time beckoning and the game deep into injury time Ben Lockley was on the scoresheet as the impressive full back broke into the penalty box and fired low into the left hand corner.

Town’s concentration slipped in the next minute as they allowed the excellent Mike Murphy to ghost down the left wing and send a low ball across Denbigh’s goal for Jeffrey White to slot home and the teams went in at half time with Denbigh having a commanding 6-1 lead

Craig Pritchard and Sion Jones were replaced at half time by Sam Haddon and Jacob Edwards, with Haddon unlucky not to get on the score sheet after 50 minutes when rookie keeper Edwards saved well to thwart Town’s youngster.

Further substitutions followed with Luca Bennett and Morgan Sadler Thomas replacing Jason Foulkes and Keiron Roberts as Denbigh felt they had the game won and allowed other squad players some valuable game time. Shortly after a further change for Town saw Harvey Bennett replacing Nathan Brown

With 68 minutes played Bridgend Street’s woes worsened when a clumsy challenge from second half substitute Rhys Foley O’Dare saw him receive his second yellow card and he had to leave the field. From the resulting free kick just outside the penalty area , Jake Walker stepped up to fire past the Bridgend wall and leave keeper Edwards helpless

On 72 minutes Walker turned provider with him laying on a ball for Sam Haddon to calmly slot home for Denbigh’s eighth.

From this point on the game petered out with Town having won the game by a convincing margin

The Denbigh fans still in great spirits continued to sing heartily and they received the players accolades at the end of the game (see photo) for their help in achieving a momentous win.

Next up for Denbigh is a return to league action with a home fixture at Central Park on Wednesday 22nd March with a 7.30pm kick off
