Denbigh Town produced an extraordinary late comeback to book their place in the second round of the FAW Welsh Cup, overcoming Trearddur Bay 2-1 despite beign down to nine men at Central Park.

Goals from Harry Martin and Tom Kelly in the final ten minutes turned the tie on its head after the visitors had taken a first-half lead, with Eddie Maurice-Jones' side showing incredible character to secure a memorable victory.

Maurice-Jones named two changes to the XI that beat Bala 5-2 eight days previous, as Tom Smith and Dan Davies came into the side. Meanwhile Reserves Seann McFee, Rhys Lloyd and Jacob Duffy were given the nod on the bench, as well as a first appearance in the squad for 16-year old Will Schrimshaw.

Town began brightly and looked to take control of proceedings in the opening exchanges. Findley Starkey-Jones was at the heart of the early attacking play, seeing a corner land on the roof of the net before firing narrowly wide from distance. The midfielder then tested visiting goalkeeper Dan Williams with a long-range free kick.

Despite Denbigh's promising start, it was Trearddur Bay who broke the deadlock in the 25th minute. Liam Morris found space to strike from the left, with his effort taking a significant deflection before finding the back of the net.

Things went from bad to worse for Town shortly afterwards when Sion Jones was shown a controversial straight red card for handball, leaving the hosts with ten men and a goal to recover. Oli Farebrother was called into action from the resulting free kick and later denied Ashley Ainsworth as the visitors looked to extend their advantage.

At the opposite end, Toby Gallagher-Keenan forced Williams into a low save as Denbigh continued to search for a way back into the contest before the interval.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Town emerged for the second half determined to find an equaliser.

Alfie Vaughan was at the centre of the action, going down under a challenge from goalkeeper Williams inside the penalty area, but the referee waved away Denbigh's appeals. Vaughan then tested the visiting stopper with a low effort as the hosts continued to push forward.

With 15 minutes remaining, Denbigh's task became even more difficult when Max Cooke was shown a straight red card following a challenge in midfield, reducing Town to nine men.

However, Maurice-Jones' side refused to give in and were rewarded for their persistence in the 80th minute.

Ben Lockley picked out Tom Kelly on the right, who drove towards the byline before delivering into the area for Harry Martin to finish and bring Town level.

The equaliser sparked jubilant scenes around Central Park, but the visitors responded with chances of their own. Callum Parry narrowly failed to connect with a cross from the left before a close-range header from a corner went wide.

With the tie seemingly heading towards penalties, Denbigh completed an extraordinary turnaround in the 86th minute.

Lockley was once again involved, bringing down a superb ball from Jacob Duffy who had won possession two minutes after coming on, and found Kelly, who drove into the penalty area before firing a low, angled effort beyond Williams to put the nine men of Denbigh ahead.

The goal sent Central Park into raptures as Town turned a seemingly impossible situation into a 2-1 lead with just minutes remaining.

Denbigh remained resolute throughout the closing stages, seeing out the contest to secure their place in the second round of the Welsh Cup.

The victory follows last week's 5-2 success over Bala Town and makes it two wins from two for Maurice-Jones since his return to management.
