Denbigh Town exited the FAW Welsh Cup at the Second Round stage on Friday night as two first-half put Eddie Maurice-Jones’ side to the sword.
Declan McManus and Corrig McGonigle’s efforts within seven minutes of each other was enough for Town to have their journey ended in this year’s competition.
Town went with the same side that beat Guilsfield 2-0 six days previous, whilst Rhys Lloyd and Max Cooke came on to the bench.
Within two minutes of the contest the visitors carved out the first chance when McGonigle linked up with McManus as the latter closed in on goal, before he dragged his effort wide. Five minutes later Josh Carey was unleashed on the right but with just Oli Farebrother to beat, was denied by the Town ‘keeper.
Denbigh began getting into the game on 13 minutes when Dan Flanders’ delivery found the head of Ffranc Vaughan-Evans, but his looping header was well dealt with. Vaughan-Evans was involved again two minutes later when Toby Gallagher-Keenan crossed for him but a defender did well to steer the ball clear at the near post.
The pressure from Town continued to build with their best chance of the game 16 minutes in. Flanders’ ball forward was brilliantly touched down by Nathan Brown, finding Alfie Vaughan inside the box who sent the ball crashing on to the underside of the crossbar.
However, the momentum switched on 21 minutes when the visitors took the lead. Sion Jones struggled to find a pass back to Farebrother as McManus ran on to the ball, before lobbing the keeper for the opener.
Bangor doubled the lead seven minutes later when a cross from the right found Isaac Godwin who tried touching towards goal just yards out, before McGonigle bundled the ball across the line.
The tempo of the game began to fade on the back of both goals, with the break coming without incident in front of either goal.
Half-Time: Denbigh Town 0-2 Bangor City 1876
In a slow start to the half, Town began making changes with the introduction of Fin Starkey-Jones and Tom Kelly as Eddie Maurice-Jones looked to breath life into the second 45.
The first opportunity of note came with 20 to play as a corner from Kelly found Ben Lockley at the far stick, but he couldn’t direct his header on target. Seven minutes later Kelly was involved on the right as he made it into the box before being brought down Godwin for a penalty. Brown stepped up for the spot kick only to be denied by Josh Davies in the visitors goal.
With Town’s opening for a comeback seemingly shut, neither side troubled eachother’s net as Denbigh exited the Welsh Cup for this campaign at least.
Town next face Gresford Athletic at Central Park next Friday.
