Denbigh Town 0-3 Porthmadog

Third placed Denbigh’s chances of promotion took a severe blow as they went down to second placed Porthmadog in this Lock Stock Ardal North-West League game at Central Park. Some clinical finishing from the Port strikers saw them take an early lead through Cian Pritchard and they followed this up with two second half goals from Rhys Williams and Paul Lewis. This now gives Port a four point lead over Denbigh as we move onto the final quarter of the season.

It was a controversial goal on 8 minutes which saw Port take the lead. Denbigh were penalised for being offside and yet referee Rhodri Owain ap Dafydd allowed Port to take the free kick from inside the Denbigh half. From the resultant free kick Cian Pritchard was able to head home from Rhys Alun Williams’ cross. Despite vehement protests from Denbigh’s players on the infringement the goal was allowed to stand.

This should have spurred Denbigh into a response and yet the game went through a scrappy midfield battle with neither side able put any real pressure on the opposing goals. Chances were few and far between with Town's midfielders Sean James ( see photo) , Paul Fleming and Keiron Roberts holding their own against a strong Port midfield.

Town centre half Craig Rogers was unlucky to see his header go just wide from a corner and Josh Davies laid a ball on for Mark Roberts whose shot was comfortably saved by Port keeper Paul Pritchard. Roberts provided a ball for Sam Jones to run onto and shoot but his shot on 30 minutes was blocked.

At the other end Julian Williams was put clear of the chasing Denbigh defence, but keeper Aaron Jones forced him to shoot wide of the target.

With the teams going in at half time with Port 1-0 up, Denbigh knew they needed a big second performance. On 50 minutes they had a strong penalty claim turned down by referee Ab Dafydd when Josh Davies was bundled to the floor by Port defenders.

Port responded and minutes later Cian Pritchard was unlucky to see his header cannoning off the crossbar.

Denbigh continued to look for an equaliser and Sion Jones sent in a great cross from the right wing only for the keeper to gather safely. Town just could not find any end product, despite plenty of endeavour.

On 67 minutes , Port had their second. As Denbigh pushed forward, Port cleared and some good intricate play against a stretched Denbigh defence saw Rhys Alun Williams able to put the finishing touch to a fine move.

Six minutes later it was game over as Paul Lewis was able to calmly finish off another Port break as Denbigh were looking to pull back a goal

A disappointing result for Denbigh in a game in which they had held high hopes. They must now look to other teams around them dropping points in the final run in of the season and in the meantime get themselves back on a winning run.
