Denbigh Town marked their first away win of the campaign by stunning last season’s champions in a 2-0 success.
Goals at either end of the game from Owen Davies within sixty seconds and Sam Duffy in stoppage time saw Town claim a huge three points at Halkyn Road.
It ended a run of six games without a win on the road and marked a first win away at Holywell since 2018.
Dewi Llion named a couple of changes to the squad with Sion Jones coming into the XI whilst Harry Lockley returned to the squad from international duty.
He couldn’t have asked for a better start to the game when Alfie Vaughan fed Davies through to slot home within the first minute of the game.
It was a fast start from Denbigh who almost doubled the advantage within ten minutes as Davies again had sight of goal but was thwarted by Ryan Woods in the Wellmen goal.
Holywell’s first chance came on 20 minutes when Beau Cornish turned well having had his back to goal but fired narrowly wide of the post. The home side grew into the game and seven minutes later Jake Roberts was denied by an impressive Aaron Jones.
Despite gaining an advantage when it came to chances, Holywell were still vulnerable and it was almost two when Nathan Brown broke before finding Iwan Roberts, but his effort was well wide.
A flurry of chances followed with Roberts testing Jones once more before Davies had two shots both saved and sail wide of the post. Holywell thought they’d drawn level in stoppage time but Cornish’s effort from range shaved the post.
Half-Time: Holywell Town 0-1 Denbigh Town
Holywell began the second half as they ended the first with pressure on the Town back line. Morgan Murray came close only to see his effort saved by Jones in the opening minute of the re-start.
Gareth Evans’ name was up in lights on 56 minutes when he ran through one on one only for Jones again to be the hero before the ‘keeper was called on again two minutes later to put a stop to Jamie Breese.
Despite the onslaught from Holywell Denbigh were still dangerous, and they reminded the hosts of that on the hour mark when Iwan Roberts’ shot was tipped over the bar by Woods. Four minutes later Davies should have doubled the advantage when one on one but he lifted his shot over the bar.
Duffy, introduced as a double change alongside Billy Holmes on 63 minutes was involved and attempted to find the target with 15 minutes to spare, but couldn’t keep his shot down. Iwan Roberts took advantage of an advancing Holywell to break but his effort was covered by Woods.
Denbigh thought they’d sealed it on 90 minutes when Harrison Bellis tucked the ball home but the flag was raised. But three minutes later the home side weren’t so fortunate. Duffy was slipped through and with conviction sent the ball thudding into the back of the net to seal a huge win for Denbigh.
Town will hope to carry on that momentum at home to Mold Alexandra on Friday night.
