Owen Davies was at the double on Friday night to bag a brace whilst goalkeeper Elijah Beattie made himself a hero with a penalty save in the eighth minute of stoppage time in a drama-filled night.
Davies opened the scoring early doors before Town were pegged back by Rob Parry’s strike, before Davies grabbed his second with 15 minutes to play.
However, the visitors were handed a lifeline deep into stoppage time when Sion Jones fouled James Stead and the referee pointed to the spot, but Beattie was the hero as he made a crucial save from Stead’s spot kick.
Dewi Llion made two changes to the side that thrashed Buckley six days previous with Jordan Pownall and Iwan Roberts coming in for Danny Clarke and the suspended Nathan Brown.
It took nine minutes for the first chance of note with Denbigh having started much the better side. Iwan Roberts did well to block a clearance before crossing for Alfie Vaughan, but a touch from a defender took it away from the forward and Davies picked up the scraps but could only fire over.
Two minutes later though Davies wouldn’t miss his target. Jones broke forward well before playing the ball to Sam Duffy who turned and slotted through Davies on the right of the box to sweep the ball home.
Davies made himself a nuisance early on and burst forward before being hacked down 25-yards out on 20 minutes before Duffy picked it up during the advantage and couldn’t make the keeper work with his effort. The visitors had their first real chance six minutes later when Parry struck a free-kick from 35-yards destined for goal only for Beattie to deny.
Town continued to apply pressure and on the half hour mark almost had a second when Roberts made tracks down the left bore cutting inside and forcing the goalkeeper to tip over the bar. Less than a minute later Denbigh had a huge chance when Duffy slipped in Vaughan who onside had an effort 12-yards out denied before Duffy’s rebound was blocked by a defender.
However, despite their momentum Denbigh were caught out. Losing possession outside the box the ball was squared to Parry who thumped it into the net in a cheap goal on Town’s part.
Denbigh responded well with Roberts fizzing a ball across the face of goal seconds after the restart before a corner was swung in but Ben Lockley couldn’t apply enough to the effort.
Chances fell to both sides to see out the half with Davies denied against by Robbie Williams between the sticks whilst former Town forward Tom Weir did well before firing wide on the edge of the box.
Half-Time: Denbigh Town 1-1 Prestatyn Town
Within seconds of the half Denbigh had two great chances when Vaughan broke down the right before his cross found Duffy in the box, who was denied by a defender before Roberts’ follow-up whizzed wide.
Roberts remained busy when blocking a clearance before having his shot intercepted on the line before Macauley Taylor applied pressure to Town before being denied by Beattie and his rebound drop over the bar.
Duffy came close to putting Denbigh ahead on 67 minutes when unleashed on the left of the box but fired wide before six minutes later he layed it to Lockley inside the box before having his shot blocked and Vaughan’s rebound missed the target with the forward unable to adjust in time.
No matter though, as two minutes later Denbigh finally retook the lead. Vaughan broke well before colliding in a challenge, the ball fell to Davies who darted through and smashed it past Williams for his and Denbigh’s second.
In the search for a third Bobby Beaumont slipped in Davies who on the right of the box pulled a shot wide, whilst the hatrick hunt remained a challenge for Davies a minute later when Vaughan’s cross was met by Davies but the keeper got down low to deny the header.
Prestatyn did have the ball in the back of the net on 89 minutes when Stead’s cross took a touch off a forward in the box but the flag was raised. Six minutes were added and in the dying embers the visitors were handed a huge chance. Jones’ foul on Stead saw a penalty awarded but Stead couldn’t beat Beattie whose heroics saw Town take three points and record back-to-back wins.
