Denbigh Town made it three wins on the spin for the first time this season as Dan Flanders’ header proved the difference against Newtown.
Tight at the back it also proved to be a first clean sheet since August as Dewi Llion’s side hit the ground running heading into the business end of the season.
Lacking in many real clear-cut chances it was a set piece that proved to be the difference in this one just before the break, whilst Town stood firm to close the gap to the visitors in fourth to just three points.
Dewi Llion made one change to the side with Matthew Worrall dropping out and replaced by Dan Davies to make his full debut, whilst new boys Hari Roberts and Mike Pearson had a place on the bench to potentially make theirs.
The first chance of the contest fell to Newtown on 11 minutes when Aidan McCann had a sight of goal from the left but pulled his effort wide across the face of goal.
Town’s first sighter came as Nathan Brown latched on to a long ball before two defenders did well to recover, with Brown’s effort deflecting off a white shirt and out for a corner whilst Denbigh claimed handball that didn’t move referee Aled Williams.
Denbigh could have been ahead on 40 minutes when Brown again had a glimpse in the area, as a cross found him inside the box but he couldn’t keep it down and didn’t trouble goalkeeper Dave Jones.
Before the break, however, Town did find the opener. Having grown into the clash a corner from Brown took a touch from Flanders and found it’s way into the back of the net via a deflection and the post. With mass confusion on who would claim it, photo evidence showed Flanders had enough to take it and denying Brown his 10th of the campaign.
Half-Time: Denbigh Town 1-0 Newtown
Town almost doubled the lead six minutes into the second half when a superb ball over the top by Gwion Dafydd found Owen Davies but one on one ‘keeper Jones made a superb stop to touch it wide. From the resulting corner it was half cleared as far as Keelan Williams, but his powerful effort was wide of the mark.
Looking for that all-important second Denbigh continued to press, and on 67 minutes a corner came in that Owen Davies headed over the bar.
Denbigh made changes to see the game out as Hari Roberts made his debut with seven to play whilst Scott McHarrie was forced off in stoppage time and Mike Pearson made his first appearance. It was tough for both with Newtown desperately slinging the ball into the box, and they were inches away from taking a point when substitute Scott Moncreiff smashed the crossbar from the edge of the box on 94 minutes.
Eventually, after more than eight minutes of stoppage time the whistle went, and Denbigh had a huge win, a clean sheet and a real sense of good form going into the final ten or so matches of the season.
