REPORT | Flint Mountain 1-0 Denbigh Town

Ollie Beech1 Feb - 19:11

- Winning run ends in Prestatyn

Denbigh Town’s three-game winning streak came to a halt on Friday night in a feature that can only be described as a mudbath.

In sweeping rain and a surface reminiscent of a trench on the Western Front, the odd goal won it in the first half for the hosts despite Town’s best efforts.

Dewi Llion made one change to the side that beat Newtown a week earlier as Sion Jones came in for Max Cooke, whilst Luke Johnston returned from injury and made the bench for the first time since October. Another new face was also on the bench as the club announced the signing of former Wrexham and US Collegiate player Jac Humphreys an hour before kick-off.

The game began with lashing rain and an already questionable pitch, taking all quality out of what had promised to be an entertaining game between two sides finding form. It took 17 minutes for the first chance which fell to Town as a free-kick routine unleashed Keelan Williams down the right who crossed for Ben Lockley, but running on to it his side-footed effort flew wide.

Six minutes later some battling in the middle of the park saw Town make inroads towards the bench via Scott McHarrie, before it fell to Nathan Brown, but his volley was off the mark.

Flint Mountain grew into it and on 31 had their lead. A ball down the left flank found debutant Luca Hogan who waded through the mud to finish one on one with Oli Farebrother.

Looking for a leveller before the break Town tried what they could, coming closest moments before the interval as Gwion Dafydd cut in from the right before curling the ball on to the crossbar from the edge of the area.

Half-Time: Flint Mountain 1-0 Denbigh Town

The second half was one of frustration for Denbigh as they pushed and pushed for more than 45 minutes. Dewi Llion made a double change at half time introducing Matthew Worrall and Alfie Vaughan, and the intent was there from the off.

However, despite constant pressure nothing was materialising for the visitors. The first real sight of goal came with 16 to play when Brown burst forward and was hacked down outside the box, before his resulting free-kick whisked just wide after beating the wall.

Rhys Lloyd was flung on with five remaining with the forward working hard but it just wasn’t happening for the travelling Reds, backed by a vociferous behind the goal. Deep into stoppage time there was one last chance, as a cross was cleared as far as Brown who volleyed at goal, but Dom Garner pushed it wide superbly to maintain the points.

Town will now look to respond next week away at Mold Alexandra.
