Denbigh Town had to settle for a point on Tuesday night in a rearranged clash with Holyhead Hotspur.
Owen Davies grabbed his first goal since January in the first half before Town came unstuck from a set piece with just over 20 minutes to play.
Davies returned to the side following suspension with Jac Humphreys taking a place on the bench, whilst Jac Jones was called up from the Reserves. Goalkeeper Oli Farebrother was unavailable with Luke Wilmot taking his place between the sticks.
Town began the brighter of the pair carving out an opportunity within a minute, a corner for Town led to Nathan Brown’s cross finding Dan Davies, but his header on goal was intercepted. It was good early intent from Denbigh, who on 10 minutes saw Wilmot find Owen Davies who flicked it on to Alfie Vaughan, he in turned squared it for Brown but his effort was dragged wide.
Still searching for the opener, Owen Davies came close once more four minutes later when Gwion Dafydd’s ball over the top found Brown who slotted in Davies, but he couldn’t steer his effort from the left on target when off-balance.
Things began to settle at both ends until 36 minutes in when finally the pressure paid off for Town. Vaughan was excellent to get down the left of the box before a low cross found the onrushing Davies who guided the ball into the back of the net.
Though the best of the two halves, the game began to fizzle out to a degree with both happy with getting to the break by the same scoreline.
Half-Time: Denbigh Town 1-0 Holyhead Hotspur
Whilst the first half lacked quality at times, the second was flat and uninspiring at both ends of the pitch.
In reality, the first chance of note came when the leveller arrived with 20 or so left to play. A free-kick from the left was headed across goal from Tomos Owen before Craig Whelan tapped in at the back post.
Holyhead now looked like the side who would possibly take all three points only to be denied by Wilmot. A through ball saw a point-blank effort denied by the stand-in stopper. Town did reply with chances of their own late on, some neat build-up play saw a cross find Vaughan who laid it back to substitute Humphreys, but he couldn’t direct his effort from the edge of the box on target.
With a minute of the 90 to play the closest Denbigh came was through a Hotspur defender, as Luke Johnston’s delivery was headed against the post and wide by a defender.
A real end-of-season affair, Town will look to finish with a flourish at home on Friday before one last away trip in two weeks time.
