Denbigh Town were soundly beaten in a contest that remained largely one-sided from the off, and rarely relented for Dewi Llion’s side.
In need of a reaction after shipping four a week previous, Town found themselves three goals behind with just seven minutes on the clock and four down by the break in an embarrassing first 45.
The hosts found a fifth late on before Alfie Vaughan converted the true definition of a consolation goal, preventing a third game in their last four without finding the net.
Town made four changes from the side that lost to Llandudno a week beforehand with Sion Jones, Dan Flanders, Scott McHarrie and Alfie Vaughan coming into the XI.
The contest began as it would continue for the majority, with Denbigh on the back foot. Within a minute, the hosts had the lead when Ryan Edwards picked the ball up and struck from range to open the scoring.
Before catching a breath, the lead was doubled with four minutes on the clock as Jake Cooke popped up at the back post to head home from Jack Sconce’s cross from the left flank. The start went from bad to disastrous three minutes later though, when a congested penalty area saw Craig Lindfield poke the ball home for a third within seven minutes.
Town needed a reaction but were smothered in their own half, as the Wellmen almost made it four 11 minutes in only for Jamie Breese’s effort one on one to be denied by an excellent stop from Oli Farebrother.
Just after the half hour mark Farebrother was called into action again, Breese with his back to goal was able to turn before firing at goal but it was tipped behind, before a corner was delivered and headed towards goal at close range by Lindfield, only for Farebrother to deny him brilliantly.
However, minutes before the break the home side had their fourth. Edwards’ through ball found Cooke who drilled it in with only Farebrother to beat and pile on further misery.
Half-Time: Holywell Town 4-0 Denbigh Town
Denbigh made a change at the break as Dan Davies replaced Keelan Williams, as Dewi Llion’s side had to change things up to avoid any further embarrassment. The game levelled out to a degree with no real clear cut chances at either end for the majority of the half.
Jac Humphreys was introduced on 64 minutes and again much like in recent weeks performed well in the middle of the park. Holywell keeper John Danby was called into action a couple of times for what was a slightly busier half than the first, but when rushing out to collect the ball ahead of Vaughan picked up a knock and had to be replaced between the sticks for the final 25 minutes.
Going into the final quarter of an hour things picked up once again, and the Wellmen’s top scorer Breese finally had his goal on 78 minutes. A line-driven ball down the left found the experienced forward who dispatched the ball into the net for five.
It took until the 83rd minute for Town to come close when Nathan Brown’s free-kick from 25-yards crashed off of the crossbar. With Denbigh in their worst goalscoring spell of the campaign, getting on the scoresheet was a small win, and Owen Davies’ ball over the top for Vaughan saw the forward lob substitute ‘keeper Tyler French to at least give those supporters behind the goal something to cheer for.
There would be one last chance for the home side in stoppage time when Farebrother was called upon to make another point blank save, but it ended at five as Town now go into next weekend’s home clash with Brickfield in the hope of ending a three game losing streak.
