Denbigh Town fell to their fifth straight defeat on Friday evening when Brickfield substitute Jay Richardson struck a free-kick in the 90th minute at Central Park.
Despite knocking on the door for the vast majority of the contest, Denbigh just couldn’t create a clear-cut opportunity or capitalise on spells of dominance, and a moment of magic won the contest late on at LL16.
Dewi Llion made three changes from the side who lost at Holywell a week previously, as Nathan Doforo, Dan Davies and Jac Humphreys came into the XI, the latter for his full debut.
Within a couple of minutes, Town had already began a spell of pressure that would continue throughout the first half, as Dan Davies crossed from the left for Gwion Dafydd, but his header was disrupted and went out for a corner.
Ten minutes later Scott McHarrie did well down the right before finding Nathan Brown on the edge of the box, but his half volley flew inches wide of the right post. Brown was involved again seven minutes later when his corner found Ben Lockley at the back stick, but his header couldn’t find the target.
The opening 25 minutes was marked when Doforo was involved on the left flank, he cut the ball inside to Brown who had a go forcing Robbie Williams to spill it, but the visitors were able to clear. Town were disrupted four minutes later when Alfie Vaughan was forced off, being replaced by Mike Pearson as Town shifted personnel.
After weathering a storm Brickfield began to get out but neither side could test either goalkeeper and went into the break level.
Half-Time: Denbigh Town 0-0 Brickfield Rangers
It took some time for the second half to really get going despite Town seeing the majority of the ball, and finally 20 minutes in Denbigh had a sight of goal. Owen Davies was played in over the top before being dragged down, before Brown’s free-kick from 25-yards couldn’t find the target.
Brickfield going into the last 20 began creep into Town territory, and young forward Osian Morris should have found the net when the ball dropped found him inside the box but Dan Flanders make an incredible tackle to deny him at the last.
Denbigh should have had the lead on 72 minutes though, Brown’s corner found Flanders who laid the ball back to Lockley, but with the ball at his feet blazed over inside the penalty area.
The possibility of a grandstand finish became a reality with a flurry of chances in the final ten, most of which though came via the visitors and substitute Richardson. After his introduction he troubled Town who were pinned back via his direct running, he twisted and turned before crossing for Danny Jones who lifted the ball over Oli Farebrother but also the bar. Three minutes later, a ball over the top of Town’s backline found defender Matt Williams but he dragged it well wide of the mark in a real lef off.
Eventually, as the clock ticked into the final minute of the 90 a free-kick for the visitors was stood over by Richardson, who cleared the wall and dropped it into the top left corner to subject Town to a fifth straight loss.
Denbigh now move on looking to end a rut at Buckley next Friday.
