Denbigh Town suffered a frustrating night at Central Park on Friday as an electric start was overturned by Holyhead Hotspur, who came from two goals down to claim a 4-2 victory in the Novira Cymru North.
Town had both Sion Jones and Nathan Brown return to a threadbare squad following suspension, with Jones entering the XI and Brown taking his place among the substitutes.
Town could hardly have asked for a better opening to the contest, racing into a two-goal advantage inside the opening ten minutes.
Jones got Denbigh off to the perfect start after eight minutes, finding the net to give Eddie Maurice-Jones' side an early lead, his first for the club in more than three years.
Things got even better barely a minute later. Jones was involved again as he found Toby Gallagher-Keenan, who struck to make it 2-0 and put Town firmly in control following a blistering opening spell.
However, Holyhead responded almost immediately when Connor Owen pulled one back for the visitors in the 11th minute in a dizzying spell which had seen three goals scored in as many minutes.
Denbigh continued to pose a threat and had a good opportunity to restore their two-goal advantage in the 33rd minute. Ben Lockley fed Harry Martin, whose low effort was denied by the goalkeeper, before the ball was worked back into the area for Lockley, only for his header to be intercepted.
Town remained in front for the remainder of the opening period and went into the interval with a 2-1 advantage.
Half-Time: Denbigh Town 2-1 Holyhead Hotspur
Holyhead emerged strongly after the restart and found their equaliser on 56 minutes, with Owen scoring his second of the evening to level the contest at 2-2.
The momentum had swung in the visitors' favour and, just four minutes later, the turnaround was complete as Codie Holland struck on the hour mark to put Holyhead 3-2 ahead.
Denbigh looked for a response, and Nathan Brown showed some good footwork on the edge of the penalty area in the 67th minute before seeing his effort blocked just moments after coming on.
Three minutes later Holyhead threatened again, with Owen sent through one-on-one after a ball over the top, but he was unable to find the target.
Town continued to push in search of an equaliser as the game entered its closing stages, but Holyhead carried a threat on the break. The visitors had another big opportunity five minutes from time when they broke through one-on-one, only for Denbigh keeper Oli Farebrother to make a good stop.
However, Holyhead eventually put the result beyond doubt three minutes from time when James Phillips added a fourth to complete a 4-2 victory for the visitors as he headed home from a corner.
The result leaves Denbigh with seven points from their opening nine league matches and they now turn their attention to next Saturday's trip to Guilsfield, where they will look to return to winning ways.
