Denbigh Town returned to winning ways on Saturday afternoon as a second half double secured a first away win since the opening day.
Toby Gallagher-Keenan and Tom Kelly found the net in a tight affair at Clos Mytton against a dogged Guilsfield side, handing Town their first league win in mid-Wales in two-and-a-half years.
Town made two changes to the side that lost a week previous at Central Park as Ffranc Vaughan-Evans and Nathan Brown came into the XI.
It took just shy of 20 minutes for the first chance of note in a stop-start game that barely found a rhythm. Vaughan-Evans drove down the right before standing a cross up for Alfie Vaughan, but his header at goal was denied by goalkeeper Mike Jones.
Vaughan-Evans was at it again six minutes before the half as he worked wonderfully down the right flank before crossing for Brown, but he was unable to angle is acrobatic effort on target inside the box. Not one for the purists, in what was a poor opening first 45.
Half-Time: Guilsfield 0-0 Denbigh Town
Another slow start to the half, the game finally began kicking into life 67 minutes into the contest. A ball over the top for the hosts found Jake O’Donnell who one on one with Oli Farebrother was denied brilliantly by the Town custodian. O’Donnell recovered the ball before finding Rhys Tisley who had his follow up also stopped.
Finally, with 19 minutes to play the deadlock was broken. A knock forward by Dan Flanders wasn’t properly cleared and was picked up by Brown, his ball inside found Gallagher-Keenan who took a touch inside and swept home from the edge of the area.
Gallagher-Keenan was replaced moments later by Tom Kelly who made an immediate impact. Elliott Orton broke down the left before his cross field ball was picked up by Kelly, who on his left smashed home to double the advantage.
In stoppage time, Town’s first clean sheet of the season was in danger when Jack Jones volley at goal from distance, only for Farebrother to tip over.
It marked a return to winning form and a first victory away from home against Guilsfield since March 2019. Town return to Central Park on Friday night with a Welsh Cup tie with Bangor City 1876.
