Denbigh Town rescued a valuable point against high-flying Mold on Friday night as 17-year old Jacob Duffy scored his first goal for the club.
Alfie Vaughan’s first half strike put Town ahead before two goals in quick succession from the visitors in the second half turned the game on it’s head. Town threw everything at it late on before Duffy struck a dream goal to snatch a point six minutes into added time.
Eddie Maurice-Jones made one change as the suspended Sion Jones made way for Max Cooke who started for the first time this season.
Town began positively and within eight minutes had a deserved lead. Tom Kelly worked well on the right before opening up and striking the left post, Vaughan reacted quickly to sweep a volley towards goal and grab his first since August.
Three minutes later it was almost two when Kelly once again was involved when his free kick was half cleared towards Toby Gallagher-Keenan 25-yards out, he volleyed towards goal and goalkeeper Joe Smith had to tip over.
Mold had their first chance on 23 minutes when Kieran Owens’ free-kick was driven low but goalkeeper Oli Farebrother was alert to get down to it. Denbigh responded well with a series of corners, the first coming via goalkeeper Smith who held the ball for too long with Town awarded the set piece. Kelly delivered and Ben Lockley’s header sailed over.
Mold began to ease into the contest when just after the half hour mark when a dangerous ball across the box evaded Iwan Cartwight just yards out before Farebrother was able to collect.
Before the break there were chances at both ends, Lockley’s effort from the edge of the area was held before Ffranc Vaughan-Evans made inroads down the left channel before his effort was blocked in the box. He was involved again minutes later when he set up Luke Johnston on the edge of the box but his shot was matched.
Seconds before the break Mold were almost level when the ball dropped in the box before a blue shirt struck the post just yards out and the whistle blew.
Half-Time: Denbigh Town 1-0 Mold Alexandra
Town were immediately under the cosh early in the second half as the visitors pressed from the restart. 16 minutes into it the Alex had their leveller. A ball forward found Luca Hogan who took it well before finding the bottom corner 18-yards out.
Three minutes later and the game had fully turned on it’s head. The ball fell to former Town forward Sam Duffy who volleyed back towards goal just outside the box to give his side the lead.
Now looking to come from behind, Denbigh had to step things up a little. Kelly drifted inside and across the face of the box before being brought down. He stepped up for the free-kick and looked to strike an arm in the wall, but the referee waved away the protest before substitute Fin Starkey-Jones blazed over.
The visitors looked to extend their lead with just over 20 minutes to play when Hogan volleyed towards goal inside the box but Farebrother made a great stop to deny.
Denbigh began to press more and more and eventually it told. A corner for Town saw goalkeeper Farebrother up for it, though at first it was cleared it, Dan Flanders caused choas in the box before it found it’s way to Duffy, who took a touch and rifled the ball into the bottom corner from distance for his first goal for the first team, and cancelling out his brother’s strike half an hour earlier.
Denbigh are now unbeaten in three league games heading into next week’s clash at home to Gresford Athletic.
