Town stunned by keeper’s last minute equaliser

Iwan Jones17 Nov 2019 - 09:13

Mynydd Llandegai 3-3 Denbigh Town

Denbigh’s players were left devastated when Mynydd Llandegai’s keeper Nic Bould headed in a last minute goal. After coming back from two early goals, Denbigh had clawed their way back to lead 3-2 with two goals from Jake Walker and one from Mark Roberts.

With a minute to go they conceded a free kick deep inside their half and Mynydd Llandegai sent their keeper forward. The ball was floated into Denbigh’s box and under pressure Denbigh’s keeper Sarnowski’s punched the ball across his goal only for Bould to head into the net from close range.

On a dank miserable wet afternoon, the two teams put on a captivating game on a pitch where the hosts were unbeaten this season. Denbigh’s manager Dewi Llion selected youngsters Dan Clarke and Jacob Barratt in his starting eleven with Stu Vernon and Will Ashley both unavailable.

Denbigh started well and had three corners in the early minutes. However, on 6 minutes the hosts scored when keeper Bould’s long kick into Denbigh’s half saw Mynydd Llandegai’s striker Osian Jones run onto the ball and he was able to fire it under the advancing Sarnowski in Town’s goal

Denbigh responded and Mark Roberts hit a low shot at pace from 18 yards which hit the post and bounced away to safety.
On 21 minutes Mynydd Llandegai doubled their lead when they were awarded a penalty after Chris Bennett was adjudged to have fouled Ben Parker. Parker took the kick sending Sarnowski the wrong way.

Despite this setback Denbigh remained positive and their endeavours were rewarded on 31 minutes when Jake Walker was brought down in the box and a penalty was given. After a long delay whilst referee Kewley spoke to several home players, Walker kept his cool and fired in to make it 2-1.

Mark Roberts thought he’d equalised when another shot of his beat the keeper but was cleared off the line as Denbigh piled on the pressure. The hardworking Sion Jones had a shot go just wide after some link up play involving Roberts and Jacob Barratt.

Denbigh pressed for the equaliser and had six corners in quick succession but that elusive goal wouldn’t come as the teams went in at half time with the hosts 2-1 up.

The second half was only three minutes old when Dan Clarke won a corner after some trickery. Jacob Barratt sent in a deep corner where Mark Roberts rose like a salmon to head back across the goal and into the net and the teams were now level.

Mynydd Llandegai reacted and should have taken the lead again when Osian Jones laid on a great ball for Tom Collins in space with only Sarnowski to beat but the forward’s shot went skyward and well over the bar.

Town’s Paul Fleming came close on two occasions to giving Denbigh the lead. First, his shot from the edge of the box was parried by Bould at full stretch to go out for a corner and then Roberts laid a ball on for him to strike from outside the box which hit the post with Bould well beaten.

As the game was reaching its final stages Sion Jones found Jake Walker ball in the box. The striker turned his defender and shot from twelve yards past a despairing Bould to give Denbigh a 3-2 lead on 85 minutes and what looked like a well earned three points.

That was until the dramatic last minute goal from Bould which saw the hosts get the draw they had battled so hard to get.

Manager Dewi Llion said after the game “This was a sickening blow for us conceding that last goal – similar to the Holyhead game when we conceded a late goal to lose. I felt we battled well in all areas of the pitch with Moses and John Terry looking sound at the back along with Dan Lloyd and Chris Bennett. Even when we made changes in the second half, we still looked in control of the game, and when Jake got his second, we should have played the game out. Credit to Mynydd Llandegai they made a game of it, but this was a lost opportunity to extend our lead at the top of the table bearing in mind that Holyhead also lost today."
