Brickfield Rangers 3-3 Denbigh Town

Denbigh managed to rescue a point in the dying minutes of this Lock Stock Ardal North West League game with a late Jake Walker equaliser. In a game where they had large spells of possession, they were guilty of some defensive lapses which allowed the hosts to capitalise and take the lead on three occasions meaning Town were always looking to get back into the game.

Stuart Jones returned to Denbigh’s defensive line up after his suspension and this allowed Will Ashley to move into his more familiar midfield position. Mark Roberts (broken foot) and Keiron Roberts ( leg injury) were still both unavailable and this gave the opportunity for youngsters from the Reserves team to join the squad.

The game kicked off early at 1.45pm because of the expected poor light and this immediately benefited Brickfield who were quick out of the blocks and caught Denbigh napping. Within a minute they had seized on a defensive error just inside Denbigh’s half and as Haci Ozlu made his way into the penalty area he was brought down, and referee Wright pointed to the penalty spot. Ozlu dusted himself down to take the kick and fired home despite Denbigh's keeper Joe Griffith getting a hand to the penalty shot.

Denbigh steadily came into the game and equalised on 11 minutes after a goalmouth scramble in the Brickfield penalty box following a Kristian Pierce corner. Stuart Jones leapt high to head in from close range and bring Denbigh back into the game.

Brickfield responded and Joe Griffith had to be on his toes to save well from Andy Vale before right winger Henry Dunn also forced Denbigh’s keeper into another great save. Seconds later and Jake Walker brought a superb save from Jamie Griffiths in the Brickfield goal after Denbigh broke down their right wing.

Ex Denbigh Town favourite Matty Cooke was having an influential midfield role for the home team, and he set up Dunn with another chance on 35 minutes as the youngster broke free again only for his shot to go well over the Denbigh crossbar.

Town did have their chances with Mike Sharples coming closest with his header from 6 yards just looping over the bar. Sam Jones and Jake Walker had opportunities and Kristian Pierce saw a fierce long range shot deflected for a corner.

Half time came with the team’s level and Denbigh had plenty of possession in the early stages of the second half . Several corners were won and from one mayhem reined in the Brickfield box before an Elliott Lloyd clearance cleared their ranks.

Chances were coming at either end now and Brickfield seized on another Denbigh slip and Henry Lunn’s shot from 25 yards beat Joe Griffith only for Billy Holmes to scamper back to his goal line and clear to safety.

On 65 minutes Brickfield took the lead with Haci Ozlu combining with Andy Vale and Vale sprinted from the half-way line with the ball to slide past the advancing Griffiths in Denbigh’s goal.

Denbigh upped the pressure and it paid off after 75 minutes when Kristian Pierce fed a ball through to Jacob Barratt who was bundled off the ball in the penalty area and a penalty kick was awarded. Pierce fired home confidently from the penalty spot

Having pulled back the deficit twice, Denbigh once again allowed Brickfield to come forward and a rash challenge on Haci Ozlu on 79 minutes saw referee Wright award the third penalty of the afternoon. Once again Ozlu had no problem converting the kick to give the hosts a 3-2 lead.

With the minutes ticking away Denbigh sent men forward seeking the equaliser with some desperate but effective defending from Brickfield thwarted attempts from Sam Jones and Jacob Barratt.

Deep into injury time substitute Lee Davey shot form 18 yards with venom and Jake Walker deflected the ball to send Jamie Griffiths the wrong way and give Denbigh a hard earned point ( See photo).

With league leaders Mold and fourth placed Llanuwchllyn losing aswell as Porthmadog drawing at Llanrwst, Denbigh missed an opportunity to return back to the top of the league. Nevertheless they must count themselves lucky to come home with a point in a game which has given manager Dewi Llion Jones plenty to think about before the next game.

That game is on Monday 27th December at 1.00pm at Central Park in a local derby against an in form team St Asaph who beat Llanuwchllyn 5-3 for their second win in two weeks.
