- Town reach Quarter-Final for the first time

Denbigh Town created history on Saturday afternoon by reaching the Quarter-Final of the JD Welsh Cup for the first time ever, with a magnificent seven.

Hatricks from Owen Davies and Nathan Brown as well as a converted penalty from Iwan Roberts brushed aside Llanuwchllyn to send Town through to the last eight.

Not since 1972 has Denbigh lined up for a game at this stage of Wales’ most historic competition and it was an unchanged side from their last outing that was chosen to take on their tricky visitors. On the bench came three Reserves in Tom Salisbury, Morgan Fricker andSerhad Kanli - the latter for the first time.

Despite the scoreline it was Llanuwchllyn who started the brightest beginning with a rush of adrenaline for what was a huge tie for both sides. Within two minutes they got forward and Will Owen’s effort struck the top of the crossbar. Two minutes later Ilan Hughes stood over a free-kick 30-yards out which was clawed away by Aaron Jones.

However, despite the early pressure it was Denbigh who found the net first. A short corner routine was eventually layed to Brown who swept the ball home from the right of the box to nudge Town in front.

Davies had the chance to double the lead six minutes later when he ran through and cut inside, he hit a low effort on the penalty spot but it was saved by the legs of Rob Dascalu. Not to worry, as on 16 minutes he did find the net when Brown’s corner met the head of Davies to make it two.

Not to take their foot off the gas Denbigh pressed for their third in a rampant spell and had it with 23 minutes on the clock. Brown again the provider threaded an outstanding ball to Davies who beat the offside trap, rounded the keeper and swept home into an empty net.

A flurry of opportunities continues to come with Sam Duffy firing over before on 34 minutes he had an effort on the edge of the box deflect out for a corner. Denbigh came close a minute later when Brown’s corner met the head of Ben Locklety but his effort crashed against the upright.

Finally the pressure told and with seven minutes of the half to play Town had their fourth. Iwan Roberts broke forward before squaring it to Nathan Brown who curled the ball into the top corner from 25-yards out.

Half-Time: Denbigh Town 4-0 Llanuwchllyn

You could have forgiven the visitors for having their heads drop after the break but to their credit they pushed on and fought back in the early stages of the second half. Five minutes in a daisy cutter of a cross was almost turned into the Town net by Lockley but it looped out for a corner. From the resulting set-piece John Evans rose highest to thump home a superb header and reduce the deficit.

Ten minutes later Davies thought he had his hatrick but his effort which he bundled home from close range was chalked off. Moments later he forced Dascalu into another stop when he chopped inside and struck a low effort inside the area.

Finally, with 65 minutes played, Davies had his deserved third. Brown’s initial effort was stopped but fell to Davies who turned the ball home from close range to put the tie well and truly to bed.

Now Dewi Llion was able to make changes and introduced the likes of Salisbury and Mackenzie Stark, with the former creatively superb when slipping in Brown down the left within three minutes of coming on, only for Brown to fire wide.

With 82 minutes gone Denbigh were awarded a penalty for a foul in the box and Brown, on a hatrick, handed the ball to Iwan Roberts. The forward stepped up and just about snuck the ball home under the goalkeeper for six.

Into the final five and Kanli was introduced for his senior debut after graduating to the Reserves this season at just 16, and now had his first involvement with the first team for his debut.

The scoring was rounded off by Brown who finally had his third when Salisbury made inroads forward before laying it to the wide man to tap in. Three goals, three assists for Brown.

The referee blew on 90 and history had been made as Denbigh reach the Quarter-Final for the first time.
