Denbigh Town Reserves more than earned a huge three points on Friday night against title-chasing Connah’s Quay.
Tom Salisbury’s double gave Town the lead whilst a late fightback was thwarted as Denbigh saw off the visitors to grab a first win since November.
On a damp day in Denbigh the game remained in the balance even before kick-off with standing water across the playing surface. However, the heroics of the coaching staff and their work on the pitch saw the late inspection passed and the game went ahead.
On a difficult surface both sides felt the game out until it burst to life on 23 minutes. A brilliant cross from Kyle Cooper found the head of Salisbury who opened the scoring for Town.
Moments later Salisbury almost had his second when his effort from the edge of the box deflected wide, whilst the visitors carved out their first chance when Josh Mather went one-on-one with Jack Moorley only to be denied by a superb save.
Serhad Kanli thought he’d doubled the lead on 28 minutes when another great cross was met by the forward’s head from close range but somehow he couldn’t direct his effort on target.
Half-Time: Denbigh Town 1-0 Connah’s Quay Nomads
Into the second period and Denbigh looked like the most likely to score early doors when some superb pressure on the Nomads back four led to Sam Tate unleashing an effort from 25-yards and smashing the ball against the crossbar.
Nomads had their first chance on 52 minutes when Mather’s cross was pushed away by Moorley only for Jacob Byron to miss the target inside the box on the rebound.
Goalscorer Salisbury looked destined for a second goal when he went through on goal two minutes before the hour mark, he looked to round the ‘keeper only for Elliot Collins to claw the ball to safety. However, ten minutes later he wouldn’t make the same mistake. Nomads pressure on the Town goal was cleared by Sean James where Ossian Jones picked it up, drove forward before sliding Salisbury in, he rounded the keeper and hammered the ball home to make it two.
Three minutes later the roles were reversed as Salisbury found Jones but when rushing through couldn’t find the target when dragging an effort wide.
Into the final ten minutes and Nomads pulled one back when Mather cut inside from the left and hit an effort at goal, deflecting harshly to dupe Moorley and make for a tense finale.
Nomads pushed for the leveller only but Town remained resolute, despite finishing the game with ten men due to injury to Gruff Rogers, to claim a win and a double over Nomads for this season.
The Reserves are next in action next Friday at home to Mold Alexandra.
