Denbigh Town Reserves ended their home campaign on Friday night with defeat against Airbus UK Broughton.
A below-par first half saw Town go into the break two down before rallying and halving the deficit, but two late goals from the visitors put the game beyond doubt.
Airbus were well on top in the first half that saw Town fail to create anything of merit. The first sight of goal came on 22 minutes when a ball played down the left channel was latched on to by Hugh Holland who volleyed at goal only to be matched by Jack Moorley.
11 minutes later the deadlock was broken when a ball over the top found Warren Leech who fired at goal hitting the post before the rebound fell to the forward to made no mistake.
Jake Jones will have felt he should have doubled the lead six minutes before the break when a cross from the left found him with space 12-yards out, but he couldn’t find the target. Feeling the pressure, Town had to dig deep but their troubles worsened seconds before the end of the half when a corner wasn’t cleared and a neat sidewinder from Lewis Buckley made it two.
Half-Time: Denbigh Town 0-2 Airbus UK Broughton
Denbigh had to begin the second half well and from the off put the visitors under relentless pressure. Within the first minute Town had their first sight of goal when working the ball forward well it came to Tom Salisbury on the edge of the box, but he couldn’t keep his effort down.
On 54 minutes Town came close once more as Morgan Fricker had a go from 25-yards which looked destined for the top corner, but it just whizzed wide at the final moment.
Looking to keep up the momentum this was a terrific spell for Liam Nash’s side who just after the hour mark came close, Salisbury again was slipped through before forcing the keeper to tip wide. From the resulting corner Ianto Jones had the ball in the back of the net, but the linesman flagged for offside.
Serhat Kanli was next in line when his outstanding run beat three defenders before volleying towards goal, beating the keeper but not the crossbar. By far the closest chance for Denbigh so far.
Kanli was in the thick of the action four minutes later when he made another terrific run, his shot was saved before picking up the loose ball and being pushed down by a defender and a penalty awarded. Salisbury stepped up and duly delivered from the spot.
Salisbury led the charge in search of the leveller and hit a great shot on the turn and forced the Wingmakers’ custodian into another fine stop.
However, with all that pressure Town found themselves deflated still, when Airbus broke and following a ball across from the right Tom Henderson tapped home with eight to play. Moments later a ball fell to Rob Jones who had an effort deflect wickedly to deceive Moorley and make it four.
